Winegrowing regions
Winegrowing region is a term defining a geographical area in which vine is grown and wine produced. The layout of wine growing regions (and thus indirectly the organoleptic properties of wines) is subject to the geological, geographical, topographic and climatic conditions as well as the winegrowing tradition with its selection of varieties cultivated and production procedures used. The new wine act introduced a new sectionalization and new names of Slovenian wine regions. Thus, Slovenia is now divided into 3 wine growing regions, which are subdivided into 14 wine growing districts, the latter being further divided into subdistricts, wine growing places and wine growing locations.

The knowledge of sectionalization is important in terms of wine designation – quality wines must display the name of the wine growing district on the label, premium quality wine labels must also include the name of the wine growing subdistrict or the close district within it, while the labels on premium quality predicat wines may also display, apart from the above stated, the wine growing place or location (the latter can be found on a special list of wine growing locations).

Its strengths are high quality, broad range and ecologically oriented production of wine. These are all reasons why Slovene winemakers have been winning top awards around the world from the moment they have entered the global wine market.
